NIPSCO announced completion of its third solar farm, continuing an ongoing transition away from coal to a more diversified energy generation portfolio that includes renewables.
The Merrillville-based electric and gas utility, which serves northern Indiana, completed Cavalry Solar in White County. The solar farm can generate 200 megawatts of solar energy and includes another 45 megawatts of battery storage.
It's now online, generating power for homes and businesses.
Cavalry Solar will produce enough electricity for 60,000 homes. It's expected to generate $25 million local tax revenue.
“The completion of Cavalry Solar, the third solar project in NIPSCO’s generating mix, is a crucial step in advancing our energy generation transition plan to provide sustainable, cost-effective and reliable energy now and into the future,” said Vince Parisi, NIPSCO president and chief operating officer. “The inclusion of battery energy storage is an example of the advancing technology we’re incorporating into our energy transition to best meet the needs of our customers.”

Florida-based NextEra Energy Resources, the world's largest operator of wind and solar farms, developed and constructed Cavalry Solar, which it operates as a subsidiary.
“We are pleased to work with NIPSCO on this solar project, and we look forward to continue working with them to bring additional renewable energy projects to the Hoosier state in the coming years,” said Anthony Pedroni, vice president of renewables and storage development at NextEra Energy Resources.
NIPSCO now has Indiana Crossroads in White County and Dunns Bridge I Solar in Jasper County in addition to Cavalry Solar. Dunns Bridge II Solar in Jasper and Starke counties has been under construction.
The utility estimated sales of excess energy from the solar farms has totaled $80 million since 2021.
NIPSO also has completed several wind farms, including Rosewater Wind in White County, Jordan Creek Wind in Benton and Warren counties and Indiana Crossroads I Wind in White County. It also has a power purchase agreement for Indiana Crossroads II Wind in White County.
NIPSCO is developing more wind and solar projects in Indiana and Kentucky as it looks to phase out coal entirely by 2028 and reduce carbon emissions by 90% by 2030, as compared to 2005.
